Yannick & Jolene Preshoot - Mumbai Wedding Photographer

Yannick & Jolene will soon tie the knot. The first time when Jolene mentioned Yannick's name I thought that she must be getting married to a Persian or an Egyptian guy. I felt this more so because she works in the middle east (see my sometimes my imaginations runs wild :P). Supposedly his super cool parents named him after a Tennis player.
They both are childhood sweethearts, just that they dint know this at that time. Only when the geographical distance between them widened, they realised that both couldn't live without each other. On a early Sunday morning these guys were sportive enough to dress up and drive almost 45k + kms to do this shoot and I am super excited to shoot their wedding :)
I always encourage my clients to go for a preshoot because:
a) We get to know each other well and that makes a ton of difference how I look at things on ur wedding day and capture them...trust me this is true and its coming from the horses mouth.
b) As a couple its very rare that you will have any professionally captured photos other than that which is taken on ur wedding day. This is a chance to have some nice non wedding couple pictures.
c) Wedding preparations can be crazy sometimes and sometime even the most awesome couple can have their moments and possibilities of some sparks flying. This 1-2 hrs is a good chance to have so 'US' time and I can capture the magic between u guys.
d) Lastly some awesome pictures of you both are a cool way to announce to your family and friends that you are soon getting hitched.

The first time I met Vanita she told me that she is gonna wear a bird cage veil for her wedding. Well in the US bird cage must be every other brides choice to be married in but here in India its still a rare sight to see. So the moment she said it, I wanted to photograph her wedding badly.

Roshni and Suraj were a photographers delight couple. They knew the importance of good photos of their wedding day hence was up for all sorts of stunts (which we made them do) even though Roshni had stomach flu and was throwing up every 20 minutes. I love this couple for the patience they had with us. I really appreciatecouples who give us photographers ample time and creative freedom to capture their wedding day. Its a lot of catching up to do in blogging front I will start with the wedding of Steven & Preeti. A wonderful and uber photogenic couple. Steven works as a branding manager for a A list company and hence for him photographs and video of his wedding where of utmost importance. I love such clients and they make my job so much easier.
Steven and Preeti got married on a beautiful sunny day. Despite the fact that the monsoons had stretched itself a wee bit more it was bright and sunny. These love birds wanted to leave no stones unturned. I love it when couple are very hands on and wanted to add their own personal touch to their D-day. Steven and Preeti made sure every little aspect of the wedding had some sort of personal touch involved right from their wedding preparation to the favours given out to the guests at the end of the wedding.

Roce Ceremony - Mumbai Wedding Photographer

Roce (pronounced as rose) is an important ceremony performed on the previous evening of the wedding day. In this ceremony a ritual hot water bath with anointing of oil and application of pure coconut juice is taken by the groom/the bride. This signifies the last bath that the bride or the groom will be taking in their bachelorhood/spinsterhood. With the ceremony of 'roce' the wedding celebration really begins. Both bride and bridegroom have to undergo this ceremony in their respective homes.

I will be frank here and say that this was the first roce ceremony for me although I have quiet a few manglorean/goan friends. Needless to say I really had fun shooting this unique ceremony. I wanted to capture the true essence of this ceremony and hence went complete documentary style :)

This is the record breaking post. Yes the shortest span between clicking a picture and blogging about it. So today morning I had a privilege to be document a Koli wedding. The Koli community is an ethnic group found throughout India. They are also one of the original inhabitants of Greater Mumbai. The family of the both the bride and the groom were full of warmth and love. Something somewhere really touched me in this wedding and it is unexplainable :)

As much as I love the sentiments involved through out a wedding ceremony, one of my favorite part is to capture the bride getting ready for her d-day. No matter how stressful the day is with all the coordinating, planning and running back and forth. This is one of those aha moments when she transforms from an ordinary gal to a bride. Yes the make up. the hair, the dress and the jewelery, all do have a part but the sparkle in her face as she gets ready to be joined with her future husband is amazing.

Are u a WHAT photographer?

"But you are in to weddings yaar!" This is what my friend told me when we were speaking of non wedding photography. I did try to explain to her that am not a wedding photographer, I am more of a people photographer. Weddings are one of the things that I like to do for the sheer fact that there are truck loads of people and emotions.

Thinking back on this conversation I asked myself what kinda photographer are you? Fashion photographer? Wedding photographer? Pet Photographer? Street Photographer? After giving some thought I feel better equipped to answer this question. I am an emotions photographer. Yes am a sucker for emotions ( yah yah the typical cancerian in me speaks again) and I love capturing the emotions. Obviously human beings are the easiest guinea pigs available if one wants to capture emotions. Wedding ritual revolves around emotions (shoot me if am wrong). It has drama, emotion, romance, action (yes sometimes the dishum dishum types too) but most importantly the entire ritual of the wedding (be it any, christian, hindu, muslim) is based on emotions. Hence weddings are my favorite to photograph.

Since no post will be complete without photographs here are 2 which was taken at Dadar Phool (Flower) Market last Sunday.

Tamilian Wedding - Mumbai Wedding Photographer

This time its a Hindu wedding from me. I must say on the things I liked about this one in particular was that it was during the day. Light is good and loads of colors. Most of the photos are barely edited. I have just tweaked a bit of exposure and temperature here and there that's it rest is all the real deal.

So this is was Kishore and Sireesha who tied the knot in a typical tamilian bhramin style wedding. I think Kishore and Sireesha was a photographers dream couple, who was super co-operative and Tamilian wedding rituals are fun at least I felt so. Here are some of them:

The groom pretends to leave for Kashi, a pilgrimage center to devote himself to God and a life of prayer. He carries a walking stick and other meager essentials with him to imply that he is not interested in becoming a householder. The girl's father intervenes and requests him to accept his daughter as his life partner and to fulfill his responsibilities as a householder The groom relents and is taken to the marriage venue.

The bride's mother washes the groom's feet on his return.

The groom is led to the marriage mandap where he and bride exchange one of their garlands thrice to symbolize their unification.

Then they are seated on a swing and offered milk and bananas by the elder ladies of the house who also throw colored rice balls in four directions to ward off the evil spirits.

C weds F - Mumbai Wedding Photographer

So here is the first wedding for 2010. C&F a very lovely couple who were pretty camera shy but at the same time was enthusiastic about getting photographed :)
Since the couple were a bit camera conscious (almost) all the pictures were candid pictures taken the good old journalistic way. No posing for the camera.
